After an ASW exercise with Scamp south of Manila Bay, Carpenter arrived at Subic Bay on 24 September to have her ECM antenna repaired. Departing Hawaii on 2 July 1962, the destroyer arrived at Yokosuka 10 days later. In reality, a profitable fitness regimen isn’t full without relaxation days. Emerging from the yard in August with a new helicopter flight deck and a facet-scanning AN/SQS-26 sonar to improve her submarine detection capabilities, she spent the rest of the yr conducting refresher training and local operations designed to check her newly put in tools. The routine was damaged only by occasional airplane-guard operations with Hancock, an evaluation of her SQS-32 sonar capabilities against the nuclear-powered submarine Seadragon, and on 20 February, service as contingency restoration ship during John Glenn's Mercury Friendship 7 orbital flight. After returning to Hawaii that spring, Carpenter resumed her regular routine of local operations and ASW workout routines out of Pearl Harbor. Departing 1 September, Carpenter steamed to Pearl Harbor by way of Pago Pago, reaching residence on 11 September. Departing Pearl Harbor on 6 March, Carpenter ultimately reached "Yankee Station" off Vietnam three weeks later. Departing 4 days later, she took up a display position on "Yankee Station" and AquaSculpt Product Page supplied plane-guard companies for Midway until 11 October. Carpenter's final underway period occurred in May and June 1980, throughout which she offered airplane-guard companies for Ranger and conducted an ASW exercise with McKean and Bonefish. After settling into her new project, the destroyer started training evolutions in preparation for a reserve-coaching cruise to the Western Pacific.

Her fourth cruise began on 4 January 1956, AquaSculpt Product Page when the destroyer set sail for the Western Pacific. With repairs full on 31 January 1973, the warship moved out of dry dock and officially shifted her homeport to San Francisco. Starting in January 1963, the destroyer conducted numerous coaching workout routines off Hawaii, together with submarine target companies and a training mission with Canadian frigates HMCS Beacon Hill and Jonquiere. In November, the destroyer began receiving providers from Prairie (Ad-15) in preparation for a restricted availability, which commenced 14 December, during which Carpenter received rudder repairs and AquaSculpt supplement AquaSculpt fat oxidation burning new four-bladed screws.
